Pork pie Gala pie for new year in Florida

Postby dragoonpvw » Thu Dec 31, 2009 10:11 pm

Just finished these pies for my Family over here in Florida. We always had stand pies (big pork pies) for Christmas and especially new years eve. back in Leeds when I was growing up. My sister likes the Gala pies so this is my first try to make one and perhaps get a slice of egg in each piece.
also trying out my new camera so here you go. Butter and lard in Hot Water pastry and turned out nice and crispy but held together very well.
I dont have any small pie moulds so I had to use a muffin pan for the individual pies. They just need mushy peas and mint sauce for a yorkshire delicacy.
happy new year all.

Wow, respect, they're superb pies. Is the meat cured as in a Yorkshire pie? Did you eat any while still hot like they do in Sheffield?

If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and walks like a duck, it probably needs a little more time on the grill.

I have to admit I've never seen or heard of a Gala pie before but it sure looks delicious! Looks like I'll have some more researching to do.
And it looks like your new camera works pretty good too.
Thanks for sharing, Dan

They are delicious and those look to be fine examples of the pie maker's art. The pastry looks particularly good and not too thick.

They look great. I'm still to do a gala pie. I really must, especially after seeing how ace yours are.

Those really do look the Biz, and from the images, that looks like a really expensive camera. Which one is it?

Zulululu, pork pies and gala pies have been discussed thoroughly. Do a search and you should find them easily.

I saw something ont the TV about them making these is long plastic sheaves - it's just one step too far for me, they're freaky. Now a cross bread hen that lays a foot long egg - that I'd want to see!

No foot long eggs but did see a good trick for a meat loaf with egg they cut the ends off the eggs then place them into the loaf. That way when you slice the loaf you will always get a slice of egg in the centre, problem solved. :)

Yes, you can do it that way - but it ruins the illusion of the chicken and the foot long egg!

LOL that's funny, but I got to ask is the whole egg typical in the UK. Here in the states, well NY anyways we don't insert eggs.
The only thing that gets a whole egg around here is a traditional Italian bread at easter that has the whole egg in the center including the shell.
