UK offset bbq

UK offset bbq

Postby wheels » Fri Aug 16, 2013 11:57 pm

We all know that we can't buy competitively priced offset smoker bbq's with any decent quality made in the UK.

There's the odd second hand 'Cactus Jack' that fetches £300-£400 on ebay (around $500), but no real market. It seems that we need to build them ourselves.

I would be grateful if members would help with this one.

What sort of price would you expect to pay for a decent offset bbq with reverse flow? Say, something made with 400 - 500 diameter tube with a 5-6mm (¼ inch) wall, for home use? That's a serious piece of kit!

Or, for that matter, what demand would there be for a commercial trailer type bbq like this:

...and what would it be worth paying?

I have a contact who could 'build them in his sleep' in terms of the skills required. But he needs to assess the market, before spending money to start production.

Anything help will be appreciated.

If I recall correctly the jambo in your pic is probably around $10,000 USD.

Thanks Vindii, that's about what I thought it would be in the US, IIRC it came to about £10,000 by the time the delivery was added.

Your paying more for the trailer too. Building one that wasn't mobile would be cheaper.

I think that the demand for smaller static ones would be more, but this would have to be weighed against the margins involved in making the trailer type. The trouble is that the UK is a much smaller market, although export to Europe would obviously be a longer term goal.

The 36* lang is MUCH larger than what I need most of the time.....only 2 of us here.
I think this little smoker is neat, it's ~$500.00

Many thanks Martin, that's just the type of info I need.

That smaller one's great: who makes them?

The one pictured is made by Devine Creations out in Wisconsin.
There's another one called the Twiggy, that was made by BBQDAD.com, but they may no longer be in business.

I do need to get out more, but they don't have enough carers to supervise.

We recently needed some extra capacity for a wedding and got a thing called a chargriller pro de lux from our local guy at http://www.planetbarbecue.co.uk/shopfrontbbq.html. Its actually really well made and has cast iron racks and a bolt on offset firebox.

Cheap and cheerful, from Walmart, $69. But I don't think this is available in the UK. IS it?

Here's a link to some builds if you and your fabricator need some ideas Phil.
