vegetable boxes from the wholesaler / supermarket

vegetable boxes from the wholesaler / supermarket

The cardboard option got me thinking, as it'll take me a while to make anything worthwhile as a cold smoker I'd look at the low cost options.

Like the idea of macs "disposable" double skin (thus weightbearing) cardboard unit.
Anyone comment / tried getting hold of the thick walled cardboard veg boxes to jerry-rig & play with before moving onward & upward?

The card veg boxes are typically pretty durable & hard to crush, making them potentially very stable when combined with a few racks clamped between them, whether upright or stacked, having cut our some of the base to allow smoke movement, or to accomodate a rack per box if stacked normally.

Just thinking this might be an option for a stack, possibly using some commonly thrown away material (& some gaffer tape) & fashion an outer wall & smoke barrier out of other waste material.

thinking cubs / scouts etc to demonstrate simplicity / a project, use a series of kitchen roll tubes or similar to create angled air intakes & the smoke out chimney?

Any downsides I've missed prior to suggesting this for my local pack to try some cheese & other stuff? ..was thinking a pack night to assemble, a pack night of light & smoke with them all trying their piece on the 3rd week, or at a weekend camp as a build, smoke & eat project.

camp seems a good idea as they are usually hungry enough to devour each other regardless!

There's some pictures of the cardboard 'Eco-smoker@ that ProQ sell here:

These may help you to come up with your own design.

Thanks Wheels, I had a good look through your blog last night, which when I saw it got me thinking, also had me scratching around for simple slot in "block" insulation.

as well as useful for creating the essential airflow retention gap between PIR foam insulation & walls for diy jobs, some extruded plastic corner strikes me as a good contender for cheap framing for a hack-job prototype cold smoker.
