offset bbq smoker & csg

offset bbq smoker & csg

Postby GUS » Fri Sep 13, 2013 9:11 am

My neighbour(ish) as a usaf personnel stationed here has an offset (can't imagine it's anything specialist) so for now we'll assume it's a leaky popular offset style.

Q. how do you suppose a big cheese smoke would work on this with a csg?

Should I stick to a slim & upright cavity in the meantime or is this worth investigating?

I don't want to lend it to him to try with low grade results, however if it works well with the csg then there's opportunity to utilise a better set up than I have right now.

(or pop into Dunelm & get their £19.99 Weber looky-likey for an up & out smoke whilst planning a proper smoke box)?

You can but try it. I can see know reason not to put the csg in the firebox of the offset and the product in the main area. After all, that's the way that an offset's designed to have it's air-flow. As to whether it's leaky, depends as always on the quality. Is it a cheap thin metal one, or a decent ¼ inch steel plate one?

Haven't looked too closely wheels, (lest I offend) ..however he is currently sampling some cheese so it'll come round in conversation soon I imagine next time I sample some of his homebrew.

Whilst I understand the offset aspect, it's hard to imagine the wispy nature of the csg filling too much space, though that's the point of not opening to take a peek at progress!

So am wondering if lighting both ends is adviseable (TBH when I tried a blowtorch it was messy, so might have to use a torch muffler to stop dust movement).

Typically the bbqs used by off base personnel are "get me by till I ship out" so we'll take it as read it's thin & leaky till proven otherwise.

I can't see the offset having a much faster throughput of smoke than my smoker. I like the smoke to pass the food fairly quickly and adjust smoking times to compensate. You'll notice that I tend to smoke things for longer than other people. It isn't because I like things more smokey: I don't. It's just that i don't let the smoke hang around!
