offset bbq smoker & csg

My neighbour(ish) as a usaf personnel stationed here has an offset (can't imagine it's anything specialist) so for now we'll assume it's a leaky popular offset style.
Q. how do you suppose a big cheese smoke would work on this with a csg?
Should I stick to a slim & upright cavity in the meantime or is this worth investigating?
I don't want to lend it to him to try with low grade results, however if it works well with the csg then there's opportunity to utilise a better set up than I have right now.
(or pop into Dunelm & get their £19.99 Weber looky-likey for an up & out smoke whilst planning a proper smoke box)?
