Smoked Chestnuts

This time of year there is a huge bounty of free food laying around waiting to be harvested. I have picked a lot of chestnuts and am going to try smoking some. I will boil and peel them first and am looking forward to the results. I am wondering whether they will need any help flavour wise or will a sprinkling of sugar and salt be enough ? I was going to treat them a little like the smoked almonds and coat them in melted butter first and then add a mix of salt and sugar. Anyone else tried doing chestnuts ??

I've never done chestnuts. As you like the way you do your almonds, I'd stick with that.

Does coating them with butter not adversely affect the take up of smoke?

It doesn't seem to on the almonds Phil, I suppose because they are only small the smoky flavour is not lost like it would be on a much larger item.
