Caustic soda eats carbon and as it is stainless it will not affect it.

PS use it in a large plastic tray (lakeland) to keep all my shelves, grill pans, hob supports like new.

thing is, caustic is a nasty niff, very gaseous!?? If so not good for lungs / environment, it should be used sparingly therefore.

As the csg gets run alot I cant see myself using that option (though I do have a lot in dry storage)

If someone wants to give it a go I've heard that mixing hydrogen peroxide and baking soda makes a great oxygen cleaner for when nothing else works. It foams like heck, but if you make a thick paste and let it sit it can dissolve burnt sugars from brewing beer so it might work to clean up a CSG also.

Good point, I'm thinking (not overly thinking mind) of the time recently I mixed vinegar & baking soda or similar to create carbon monoxide in order to put a delicate creature to sleep gently, ..no fumes of that type then? (will check it out hydrogen peroxide easy to get locally).

Mrs Young tells me that she cleans ours by immersing it in a solution of 'automatic' washing powder dissolved in hot water.

I decided to try Wheel's presumably better halfs method & work backwards, though think i'll give the coca-cola one a miss based on cost for "proper coke" & can't be bothered with a trip to get some cheap tooth rot when I have some "real thing" in the cupboard ready for a hunk of meat / sauce purposes.

So I opted for a cheap Biological liquid washing detergent in the butler sink for the first clean of the Artisan.

looking ok, certainly no undissolved grunge apparant, room in sink to manouvre, wash, & jiggle carbon & tar free.

As ever though it does leave stuff behind, plenty of it, & this muck stuck somewhat like corn inbetween the teeth is what i'm wanting to avoid, based on previous wire poking sessions with small tools.

so for cleanliness (ie no mucky spray up the walls) the butler sink is a winner for cleaning, the detergent doesn't have a high froth from the hand agitation compared to washing up liquid, so that is good too.

Therefore it allows a good deal of quick & moderately effective scrubbing with the standard kitchen sink brush, less knuckle knocking than the regular sized csg, ...so I am overall very happy!
..........................

Will dig out some chemicals to try for next time & make a loose inaccurate beard stroking comparison, however I feel the regular hole poking (or nit picking) is here to stay.

I think that she leaves it to soak overnight - I'll get more accurate details next time she does it.

Carbon dioxide :D

Mixing Hydrogen peroxide with baking soda will give you carbon dioxide, sodium hydroxide ( caustic soda) and water.

Yeah, we need to get this licked, I've spent way too much time "fussing over my csg, cleaning it is the intensive part, using it in anger, paradoxocally, ...it is completely left alone

I want my former like my latter simple, & non taxing.

Last year some friends of ours suffered a terrible house fire,it burned to the ground. Lots and lots of fire damaged items as a result. I have been restoring some fine Chinese porcelain for them, and the first job has been to remove thick, tarry layers of smoke deposit before I can rebuild the pieces. All the usual household cleaners had little effect, although Cillit Bang wasn't too bad. Then I googled restoration and found Oxy powder is used a lot for this kind of thing. It can be mixed to a paste and spread on, or a strong solution dissolved in water and the item left to soak. It works a treat, it might be worth a go with the CSG.

Just a thought

I see what you mean! You will find Oxy powder in tubs in the washing powder aisle in any supermarket. Vanish do one, and most supermarkets have their own brand, same stuff only cheaper. Aldi and Lidl do their own as well, even cheaper. It's handy for shifting stubborn stains etc in the wash.

Worth a try, be generous with it. I believe it works by creating oxygen bubbles, but I'm no chemist/physicist. It certainly gets your washing white. Good to be back, I broke my shoulder pretty badly back in May so I've been one handed for a while, him indoors has learned to make sausages! Much better now thanks to great physio at Ely hospital. I have a new CSG in the shed waiting for it's first airing, might use it for a salmon for Christmas.
