Making charcoal

Has anyone had a go at making their own charcoal?

I've read up about it and know the basics but i wondered if there's any first hand knowledge or tips about. I was planning to have ago this summer

Cheers

I keep threatening to try it (but then Tesco has it at 50p/kilo) and have got a couple of drums from work that I've yet to burn the paint off.
When I was using a large ceramic cooker I used a can (SS storage tin) with a few holes in the bottom that I put smokewood in and buried in the coals to flavour the cook. It produced good charcoal but on a very small scale.
I'm itching to try - I've stashed away a load of wood from a fallen apple tree and have a lot of oak in the firewood pile
