George if you take off the top cover and expose the top of the gearbox you will find a large slotted disc which unscrews.

You just remove this and pump in the grease with a grease gun prefereably until it is full..........I don't know if the trick of melting the grease and pouring it in will work...but this is donw frequently with awkward access holes.

Hi
its underneath. I tube of gearbox grease was about 6 quid plus delivery. I used a 1/3 tube, run the machine upside down and just let it slide in slowly. The machine is quieter now.

I was amazed at the amout of crud under the covers but at least it gave me a chance to use the new steam cleaner

Sorry I never caught you post when you couldn't find the screw...it is the
size of a two pence piece.

It is amazing all the congealed flour etc that gets under the covers.

Another place to put the grease is under the plate where the K beater
fits ...thats the planetary action.

Undo the domed nut and remove the round plate and squeeze a good bit of grease round the outer cog and on the innner one too.

Hi
I am even more confused now!

The screw I found was the size of a 1pence piece on the underside of the gearbox, no domed nut and I don't know how the get the planetry gear cover off to put any there. I will have another look later. I used about a quater of the tube of grease and the gearbox is quieter now. What was in the gearbox was thick pale brown. The new stuff is a bit like KY jelly to look at and it did not want to flow into the gearbox.

Just made my first batch of sausage (Its on the beginners post)

Thanks for all your help so far

Hi George...

You are right with the one penny size,,,,it was just a large screw.

where you stick the k beater and the dough hook above the bowl there is a chrome plate and in the centre of this is a nut holding it on.......if you undo that it reveals the planetary cog that goes round inside the big one.

Hi George, how did you access the bottom of the gearbox?, there's a nasty gear crunching noise coming from mine when I knead dough :(

In all probability this is the planetary gear pinion which is either stripping it's teeth ot the planetary ring is breaking up.

Turn the mixer on it's back and whenre you stick the dough hook there is a domed nut that holds a silver plate in place. Undo this and gently lift off the plate with its pinion.

Examine both as the pinion can be replaced but the planetary ring is part of the gearbox and must be replaced.

The cheapest way of doing this is to buy a spare machine off of ebay.

Any more problems let me know as I have had dozens of these machine apart.

I looked in the planetary gear mechanism and it didn't look too bad, though could do with a bit more grease. I thought the noise was coming from nearer the motor housing, how easy is it to get in?

You only need to undo four screws to remove the top of the gearbox
so just take off the plate held by three screws where the liquidizers fits and then remove the top complete...you may have to remoce the four little screws that hold the underplate by the planetary disc. also prise off the rubber drive belt and you may have to remove the belt driven plastic gear on the top of the gearbox...screws can be got at through holes in the gear.

there are only four cogs in the gearbox and it may just be short on grease,

Kenwood gearbox

Postby clivmar » Sun Apr 30, 2006 9:07 pm

Before you spend any money check the drive belt. As it wears and slips over the cogs it makes quite a racket. I'v replaced my belt twice over the years when I thought the gearbox had packed in. The last one cost 3.50.
