Any ideas on the best way of making a sensible quantity of my own wood dust without being tainted by oil froma chain saw?

try and find access to a hammer mill, you can use a chipper to get the size down some, then run thru a hammer mill to get the final size. Or a lot of runs thru a table saw with a dado blade, that will make a lot of saw dust fast, but a lot of work.

I use my TroyBuilt yard chipper/shredder to produce wood chips for my smoker. It is not sawdust texture but seems to work fine. I have generated 5 gallon pails of hickory or pecan chips in less than 10 minutes.
So....find yourself a neighbor with a wood chipper.
