Hi.
I am just wondering what you would all ( roughly) pay for a kilo of meat for making sausages?.
Last week I ordered from an Australian butcher here in Singapore. A discussion by phone led them to sell me a kilo of what they called pork and 'trimmings' . I noticed that they charged me this under their price for 'diced pork', which converted to sterling would be about seven pounds, which I think is quite steep!!.

I've just paid 2.85 a kilo for boneless belly pork in Morrisons supermarket. It's for bacon, but I use it in sausages too.

$1.99 USD for pork shoulder in the states. Probably doesn't taste as good as your meats, though, as it is mass produced. Family likes the wild boar, though, and when it cols off, will get to harvesting them.

Thanks for your replies. I think 7.00 is definately expensive, especially as they are essentially just selling me their 'scraps'. I am going to enquire about buying a piece of belly and wait to see what they will charge for that.

Hi Kitchen Angel,
Wouldn't your local ColdStorage have cheaper cuts of pork for sale? There must also be wholesale available as well in Singapore, as the Chinese community use lots of pork in their cooking.

Richard

Kitchen Angel,
Hi, I'm Lance from KL Malaysia, I use quite a lot of poultry and after trimming of joints and tendons I guess I'm paying close to RM12 per kg (about 5.50 sing dollar) of whole chicken leg. As for pork, I pay about RM15 for the shoulder and RM16 for pork belly. Pork fat is really cheap and I've never asked the price.
As for the price you paid for the pork, I think it's way too high. I believe most of the pork in Singapore comes from Malaysia and even the best cuts of meat will cost nowhere near the figure you paid. I think you'll be better off buying fresh pork from the wet markets.

Our last hog (205 LB hanging weight) cost us $1.20/LB U.S. for the hog, kill fee, cut to spec and packaged...locally grown. Pork butts, shoulders and occasionally bone~in loins can be had for $.99/LB...corporately (real word?) grown.

last time I got some pork from the butchers I paid 23 for half a whole belly (ribs in) and it was about 10lbs in weight ish. The shoulder I got was a little more expensive I think. But as my Grandma paid for it all (she wanted me to make her some sausages) I didnt keep track of the price lol
7 is FAR too expensive. You might need to shop around a bit for some better value, or grow your own if you have the space hehehe
