Hi guys. aris diplomacy not your forte huh.

Cheap spices are first subjected to a process that extracts the oils from them. So this produces an inferior version of that particular spice.

Best if you can to pick them fresh and dry them yourself. Second choice don't buy the cheapest you can find.

I know the spice shop is a nice shop, but they are expensive. By the time you have paid the 3.75 postage, and the 1.85 for the berries, they come to quite a bit. Oh, and they have a 10.00 minimum order.

There is no reason why cheaper necessariliy means inferior. Spices (with some exceptions) generally are not expensive.

By the way you should be able to get Juniper berries from Tesco too:

SCHWARTZ JUNIPER BERRIES 28G 1.37 (from the Tesco website)

I live quite near the Spice shop so I just pop down there. Yes I suppose you are right they are expensive if you have to buy online.

Mind you the spices from the Spice shop are top quality. I bought mace blade from the supermarket and some from the Spice shop. There was a marked difference the one from the Spice shop much more pungent.

I have just bought some vanilla pods from there they are lovely and sticky with loads of flavor.

I know it isn't possible for everyone but a walk in certain areas of Northumberland or the Wear Valley will lead to as many juniper berries as you can pick...loaded with oil and a very rich aroma. Apart form being an indispensible ingredient in game cooking, try flavouring cheap gin with them, rather like sloe gin...wonderful stuff.
