Cure No1 and colouring?

Cure No1 and colouring?

I'm currently trying a Len Poli recipe for Polish sausage which uses cure no 1, I've never used cure No1 and would like to know if it turns the curing meat a strong reddish colour?
Or is the smoking that gives the sausage it's pinkish colour?

Cure No 1 contains nitrite which in turn turns the meat pink during curing.
much like bacon & smoking effects the outer colour.
