I thought I'd start the ball rolling :D

I've just been diagnosed and have been told to restrict dairy amongst other things. I'll be trying to produce some diabetes friendly cheeses etc and will summarise any progress here with the actual recipes in the relevant sections.

I'm sorry to hear about that Dave. I wouldn't presume to give you any advise but, if like me you did like a cup of tea with sugar, then the best sweetener to use by far is SPLENDA.

Have a look at their site for some info.

If I can help, here on the forum or PM, please don't hesitate to say.

Thanks Oddley, I see the diabetic nurse tomorrow for a chat about diets so if I have any questions I'll be in touch.

All the best,

Dave

Yes, splenda is best - you can get it at any supermarket. I used to import it from the US before it was available in the UK (ironic as the active ingredient - sucralose - is a British invention). Avoid the 'spoon-for-spoon' version - it is cut down with loads of maltodextrin which is highly glycemic. Use the little tablets - you can put them in tea/coffee as sucralose is very heat tolerant unlike aspratame - and also in cooking (though it will not caremalise like sugar). Sucralose is actually a modified sugar.

Wow, you newbies, ain't it a bugger, having to pee every two minutes, and that very important afternoon nap. Until you find out... :D

How did you get on ?

Loose weight, stop smoking, stop drinking, reduce your fat intake, take more excercise and don't forget your 5 a day

Drugs :-

Blood Pressure
Diabetes ( Metformin )
Statins

Just a guess

If you do everything they say, you are not living life, you are just existing.

I've never smoked :) I've now been getting excercise :) have cut my alcohol intake down (not out :) ) have lost weight :) and in 2 weeks glucose has dropped from 10.9 to 6.5 mM. She was rather pleased with me and didn't bother discussing what I should or shouldn't be eating...

I'm on Blood Pressure drugs and statins BTW.

I do plan to live not just exist

I'm still stuggling to get my sugar levels down, I'm behaving myself my levels vary wildy between about 12 and 17 mM ( I've been up to 22mM).

The clinic seem fairly pleased that it has a downward trend, so apart from some consessions to the condition ( like no sugary sweets etc ) it doesn't affect my way of life too much

Was just wondering if any of you 'metformin junkies' keep have wierd dreams.. so convincing as well. I found myself wide awake looking behind the bedroom curtains for my artery forceps (use them for unhooking fish). Not induced by any alcohol I might add. A couple of my pals who are on metformin also said the same.
I mentioned it to my diabetic consultant and she looked at me as though I am mad.. but quickly added some piaglitazone LOL to my junkie box.

Even though I am being a good boy, can't get the levels down enough and my GP is indicating the impending possibility of insulin supplement.. The one good point with that is I would get syringes and canulas on free prescription.. for some reason all I could think of was ham

Had a bit of a foray into 'low-fat' sausages and everything about it is wrong.. just have proper ones not so often..

I'm on Metformin too (as well as Rosiglitazone) and I get a lot of vivid, realistic dreams. It's like living a whole other life sometimes.
I didn't link it with Metformin but thinking about it I'd say they've only started since I went on the drug about four years ago.
