Wear gloves and ear protection. The unit I've seen work looked similar, and it tilled the grass up, but then grass grew in the garden after the runners re-established themselves.

I saw Gardeners World tonight on BBC2 where they took 10 weeks to clear an old allotment, but only after taking a JCB in to take the surface off first

10 Weeks and using a JCB ?? Seems a bit lengthy, but I'm no expert. If that is any indication the patch of ground I have been keeping a eye will take years !! Making me have second thoughts now.

They skimmed off the grass with a mini jcb and then dug it over. I think it was the latter that took them so long. I have no idea how may hours a week they put in though, but I suspect it wasn't many. I'll let you know how long it takes me

It is something I would like to do, however, the OH says she will help but I doubt it, and then I'll have no free time at all to other stuff as I'll be committed to the plot !! So, your experience with a neglected plot will be a valauble yardstick for me before I enter negotiations with my neighbour.

I would expect it to be quite time intensive right at the beginning and as the plot becomes less wild and your experience increase I would expect the time spent on the plot to become less and less, up to a point of regular maintenance and planting. I would have also thought it depends upon the seasons too.

If you have the time Dave, you should knock up a daily/weekly blog, you're certainly eloquent enough to make good reading and it would be, in the current climate, quite topical too as there does seem to be a resurgence of interest in allotment holding and growing your own.

I'll certainly be looking forward to your updates.

That's quite an idea Mike, thanks. If I'm writing it down anyway I may as well set up a blog. We picked up the rotavator from Banbury today, so I may soon be starting the hard work.
