I spent 2 and a half hours down there yesterday with a strimmer:
Somewhat to my surprise I discovered an area that had been carpetted
and the grass was growing on top of the carpet.
Lifting the carpet revealed rich dark earth, lots of earthworms but also a network of tunnels up to 2" across...

Bet the carpet was red!

That was a stroke of luck, it should save a lot of work. The soil looks nice and dark should work up nicely. When do you usually plant there?

Most sowing in the ground will be May June with some a bit earlier under cover, that gives me all winter to get it dug over.

Thats when I plant also, but for the next 4 months there is a couple of feet of snow covering my garden. I can't get into it until mid April or like last year it was mid june before it dried up enough to work. Such is gardening

I don't think I'll have that problem. In fact a few hard frosts to help break up the soil would be nice these days.

I planted 21 strawberry plants today
I have put in stakes and posts and am in the process of rabbit proofing it with chicken wire before planting anything that might be considered edible to our lapine friends. I should be getting a fair bit more done in the next few weeks now the weather is improving (touch wood)

Picking: leeks, kale, cabbages. Turnips are over the top. Carrots - ugg. Remind me to enviromesh them this season. Only good for rabbit trapping.
Still eating and cooking apples - but they aren't from the allotment.
Spuds. Desiree-50% internal discoloration. PFA - OK.
Pontification -- don't go over the top when you start digging.

I took the girls down there today, Charlotte was unbelievably impressed by the progress I have made.
