Hi Mike
I am about 8 miles from you and have problems growing pears. Any advice?

Love the idea of perry, how are you doing it? Demijohns?

Hi George,

I'm no pear grower unfortunately, I got mine off my dad, so I can't really give any advice :(

I've never done perry before, and the recipe I have is to just place all the juice in demijohns and leave for about 6 months to ferment.

I got the recipe from here..

Hi
I have researched this before and met a man who produced 50 gallons from conference's

Apparently they take a long time to clear

George, I'm assuming that the tress are growing okay but not fruiting. If so then just a couple of things to think about pollination. Firstly they flower earlier than apples so try to avoid planting in a frost pocket otherwise you will get no fruit. Also like pears most varieties are not self fertile so need another pear variety near, some are also triploids which mean you need 3 compatible varieties for successful pollination.

Hi
thanks

Done all of those things but still trying. After I planted the pears the local council Arberculturist (Spl?) told me Manchester was marginal for pears

Are you a member (or even heard of ) The Northern Fruit Group?

Met up it a couple of them last week who told me I MAY have Fire Blight as well

Two questioms. Do your trees flower? Do the petals fall off, or the whole flower bud?

Depending how juicy they are you might get up to 8 or 9 litres of juice out of them...
