Well right now I'm having a problem with my lettuces, cabbages, broccoli and cauliflower getting picked away at.

So what are my homemade options? I don't want to use any type of commercial pesticides because that would totally void the whole purpose of having a garden.

It might be a bit late for it, but I use Dipel powder which is a natural pesticide. Those pretty white butterflies you see in your garden are not your friends. Your only other hope is that the plants grow faster than they can be eaten.

I use chilli garlic good for most creepy crawlies
or
Molasses I get it real cheap(I live in a sugarcane growing area)
Great for caterpillars, kills nematodes and its a fertiliser, and attracts fruit fly so I only use it in cold weather or on non fruiting veg, also use it mixed with poison as a bait for fruit fly. you spray the grass and the fruit fly go there and die
or
squash what's eating them and make a tea of their dead bodies and spray it on them.(home made dipel)
or grow marigolds as a deterrent plant
or
allow carrots to flower it attracts good bugs that attack bad bugs
