The last new cookie I made this year was Thomas Keller's "TKO" also from his Bakery cookbook (this also can be found online).
It is pretty easy to guess what cookie he was looking to improve upon (and does). If you want a real dark color to the cookie, use coco powder marked "noir". You may need to add some milk to the dough to get something that can be rolled and cut. After the filling has cooled, whip it to a spreadable texture.
