I am having a New Years party and I want to have a first course of Onion Soup in Bread Bowls. Cant find a decent reicpe that will stay together unless it is for chilli etc.

Anyone any ideas please. I guess it will be a recipe based on a type of dough I use for making my wheat sheaf display pieces, but I want this one to be eatable................

Cheers Phil, I have tried a recipe pretty similar to that, it lasted about 2 minutes before it collapsed.

I guess I am going to experiment with the dough mix I use for my table decorations. The dough ends up solid as there is so much salt so it will either be to hard to hollow out or the salt may taint the soup, so it is going to be a long day in the kitchen experimenting.

Only thing I can suggest is baking a normal bread hotter and longer with lots of steam to get as thick a crust as possible...

Richard Bertinet has a recipe in his book "Dough" that worked OK for me - except I couldn't get the bowls to stand up straight on their own!

Let me know if you want me to post a "variation" of the recipe - it might just be in time for your "do"

Tried a few different ways but failed this time so reverted to plain ceramic bowls.

Did one variation based on the recipe I use for my wheatsheaf table decs - well if you wanted to throw it and knock someones head off, or used a road drill to hollow it out - it would have been perfect.

Everything else just let the soup seep through in no time.

So I am treating it as a peronal challange to make a soup-proof bread bowl for my next dinner party.

Perhaps I have found a use for the cheap Lidl flour/chalk stuff at last :lol:
