Thanks Damien, I do have litmus but thought this other tester might be a slight improvement without having to shell out too much money.

FWIW, I bought one from the garden centre designed for testing soil - it wasn't very successful at all - the readings were so varied that you couldn't tell which the true one was.

I have one similar to that on amazon. You can get them cheaper than that on ebay.

I've never tried it with meat. It works OK for liquids. I can just about get it to read cheese curds by packing them tightly round the sensor but it's a bit hit and miss. They are reputed not to last very long but at that price...

I think the cheap soil ones with the metal rod are pretty much useless but I haven't tried one for many years. They may have improved since then but Phil's comments imply that they haven't.

This look like a proper thing but 10x the price.
