The next food trend?

Postby wheels » Sun Mar 31, 2013 6:19 pm

I couldn't believe the price, £8.79/kg for breast of lamb:

Very interesting Phil especially as its only 63% lamb!!

Same thing with buying fish in boxes, birdseye, findus etc cod portions, look at the ingrediants slightly over 50% fish, people need educating!!
Regards Gary.

PS I bet breast of beef is not that expensive! Ha,Ha.
My biggest fear in life is that when I die my wife sells all my stuff for what I told her I paid for it!!

Yet underneath the breast is a Leg of Lamb advertised @ £4.00 a kilo - know which one I would buy..... I've noticed a lot of the big supermarkets putting certain cuts of meat on promotion, yet leaving lesser cuts more expensive, getting weird with their marketing.

I don't think this is a new trend. :D

Did some celebrity chef do a show making lamb breast into bacon (it's best use), or some other fantastic dish? I've seen some cooking shows distort grocery store pricing. Talking to my butcher last weekend, he said that this year chicken wing prices went up before the Super Bowl (usual), but they didn't come back down after the game.

Fiji has had a ban on it for while to try and curb an obesity epidemic.
Its been dumped on the Pacific Islands for quite while.

That's interesting. I guess that some chef's been promoting it, or it's appearing in restaurants because they've forced the price of pork belly up so much that they can't make the profits they want.

It just stuck me as being extortionate, given that I buy lamb a lot cheaper - I don't pay that much for lamb chops!

It's been on some show quite recently, it might have been featured on the Hairy Bikers EVERYDAY GOURMETS back in January.. I remember groaning at the time that the price would no doubt rocket :)

That explains it then, Dave. To a certain degree, anyway. Fortunately, whilst overpriced, it's still only a couple of quid a kilo at the abattior!

been doing a sous vide breast of lamb for a while now..stuffing and rolling it up with a few chopped dried apricots chucked in the stuffing then 15 min blast in the oven once its cooked to render down the fat a little...wrong in so many ways but it does taste good :D sadly ive noticed the price creaping up also on what used to be a real cheap cut of meat..seems a whole leg of lamb on a special offer is not far off the price of the breast of lamb these days so its a no brainer really
Phil noticed your entering the world of sous vide on your website posting..watching with intrest and waiting for your usual killer recipes to start appearing

I'm afraid I'm very much "the new boy" when it comes to sous-vide. I'm looking forward to playing some more though.

Keep the idea coming!

If your water's boiling you're doing it wrong.
