Scales To Measure Small Quantity in Grammes

Postby MrB59 » Wed Jul 03, 2013 5:25 pm

Hello .. I am about to embark on making sausages for the first time and have been able to determine the tools required with the exception of scales to measure the smallest qty's needed for spices etc when using the percentages to meat etc.

Tried searching the site to no avail.

Are there any brands and suppliers to be recommended - what price could I expect to pay for reliable and accurate scales.

Thanks in advance

Of course, it depends on your desired level of accuracy. I paid about $45 US for my American Weigh Systems LB-501, 500 g x .01g digital scales. I paid a little more for my MyWeigh 8 kg x 1 g digital kitchen scales. They are plenty accurate for me, but I could have paid hundreds or even thousands for scales of similar capacity and resolution. My fine resolution scales came with calibration weights, and after more than a year of regular use, have not drifted.

Or, as you are just starting out and perhaps don't want to spend too much to start with: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004VZ0KUK/r ... _M3T1_dp_1

Hi,
When I started making sausages and weighing cures I bought two 0.1 gram scales from China, Cheap as chips, free postage and both had calibration weights as well. Check Ebay.uk or au
They are still in use with no problems and no need to even re-calibrate them. Mind you I use both scales to check the cure weights only. Just to feel secure.
Cheers,
Jan.

I use one similar to this and does the job fine.

Not a bad price at £4.55 inc. postage.

Might be worth taking a look at this thread: http://forum.sausagemaking.org/viewtopic.php?t=7843 for tips on how to calibrate a balance.

I use something similar to this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B007686 ... X110_SY165

Cheap and cheerful, but 1 gram accuracy. I've been using it for years to weigh hops, and for the last 18 months, for spice weights.

Looks like they are coming down in price - only £3.95 inc.p&p. Might buy a spare :D

Handy little gadgets for weighing the spices when you are only making small batches of sausages. I doubt that they are 'spot on' but as long as they weigh the same each time then the're good enough for me.
