I thought the bit about they dont use the heads because the enamal of the teeth may damage the machines just says it all about thier priorities. I thought C.J.D would have taught people a lesson by now but as per usual too many people will lose out financially.

This is why I breed my own and butcher them myself the only thing I cant do is finish them and this is only down to red taped beurocratical nonsense which in the same breath as not allowing me to take a shotgun to one of my own pigs as it happily tucks into nuts, allows adult pigs to be transported for over 24 hrs stressed to hell and treated however at the abbatoir! by the fat cat commercial producers. Shall go and take a chill pill now.

I did go off on one there did'nt I. Anyway red-tape applies to shotgun licenses and all the parafanalia that goes with it, whilst also covering the much debated term of 'the owner' only being allowed to consume the meat not the wife, husband, or kids but the arguement can be made that they to are the owners so is the man down the street and the woman in the next county and round and round we go again on the beauricratical merry go round ( I will have to learn how to spell that one day ) but at the end of the day its right what you say and if you want to take the risk then who is going to find out

I think we have fairs like this in Britain, which are aimed at the processing and manufacturing industries more than the consumer. I'm sure you would find it interesting if that is what you went for, but wouldn't you rather go to the Slow Food Expo in Turin in October?!!

There's a programme tonight on BBC1 at 7pm.
"Should I worry about..." This week the subject is Sausages.
I've seen a preview where they're talking about some sausages being cheaper to buy than Dog Food!!

I think anyone who still buys ready made sausages should watch this.

Those of us that only eat sausages they've made themselves will be doubly reassured that we've made the right decision.

Having now seen the whole programme I must admit I'm dissappointed.
I was expecting an expos� of the sort of crap that goes into commercially produced sausages and all we got was a healthy eating lecture about fat and salt content.
I think Hammy lost the plot somewhere!

On the same theme there are two that you should look at. The first one changed American sausage/meat processing and lawmaking forever.

1) The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. This is available in its entirety on numerous web sites

2) "The Awful Truth about your Christmas Sausage" The Daily Mail 12/20/2003. Was available online or through Highbeam Research

It will certainly change your outlook on sausages

I think our outlook on commercially produced sausages has already been changed. That's why we make our own.
These articles and broadcasts just increase our "smugness" level by reassuring us that we are doing the right thing

I would recommend that you read The Jungle by Upton Sinclair if you get the time. I don't have my copy in front of me at the moment, but I believe that it was written in the 1930's. It's 30 some chapters long and will give you a totally different outlook to the immigrant situation in the US at the time, plus obviously the meat industry. It is actually an interesting read.
