Hey Deerstalker

Like you I really enjoy Smoking Fish and hopefully sausages, hence I joined this site. I notice you smoke Eels, this is a bit of a Holy Grail for me, I have tried a number of Fish Monger for Eel as well as Billingsgate
Fish Market, although that really is too far to travel.

Can you aquire Fresh Water Eels for Sale, and if so, what price would they be.

I am surprised you can't obtain eels from the fishmongers. Do you know anyone who goes fishing? When I used to go freshwater fishing regularly, I used to catch plenty of eels and used to keep a few to jelly up. Unfortunately it's the wrong time of the year for catching eels but they are very active during the summer especially so at night. With the Bristol Avon running through Chippenham, which is fairly close to you, it might just be a case of asking around.

Hi Deerstalker

Thought I had replied to your message, it seems to have disappeared into the ether. I own a Bradley Smoker, and would really like to try Smoked Eel, I notice you have smoked a variety of fish, (including eel) and was
wondering if you can aquire Fresh Eels I would be interested in buying them for Smoking

Hi Paul

Thanks for your reply regarding Eels, I have contacted a number of Angling Clubs for advise on Eels. Unfortunatly eels are in decline, and
the fishing club members were horrified that I would want to eat their
eels

I was hoping that some of the folks using this forum might know some licensed Eel Fisherman, the Smokeries will not sell the small quantities I require. The fact is they will not sell any fresh Eel only those that they have smoked themselves

Unfortunately, elver fishing takes hundreds of thousands of immature elvers (baby eels) each season, and quite a bit of elver fishing takes place on the Severn. The elvers command a very high price in restaurants. I doubt that taking half a dozen larger eels every so often would have an impact on eel stocks though.

All the eels I have smoked I have caught myself. Although we have a wonderful fish market (not fishmonger) nearby, I can't remember seeing freshwater eels for sale (I wonder if conger is nice smoked? :? ). I'll ask around as I know the owners and trawlermen.
