Salt - bulk buying

Postby milesthemeat » Mon Feb 13, 2006 1:04 pm

Hi all meat fans!!!

I'm hoping to go head first into some curing. A lot of salt is called for and I was wondering if anyone knew of a wholesaler of nice coarse sea salt?

I live near Shrewsbury and if possible would like a shop I can collect from as I expect the shipping costs will be large!

Many thanks

Miles, Franco normally does free postage, he is good like that

While we are talking about salt, I have a sausage salt question, how much would be a good amount to put into a Kile of sausage mix? I have put a teaspoon per kile in for my last batch, and it seems a little short of salt....discuss :D

hmmm sausages 1.5% of the mix is a good place to start, That is 15 gm or about 1 tablespoon.

I'm afraid you'd have to collect at that price  seriously though if you need it delivered I can get it shipped for 9.

If I ordered a bunch of stuff that you normally do post-free (casings, wood-chips and cures etc.) as well as 25kg of salt, would the same 9 cover the postage? I know how hard it can be to turn a quid doing mail order, so I don't want to take the p##s. :D

If the total weight is under 30 kgs I can do it for 9 but if it is any more than that I'll have to send it on a pallet and it gets expensive.

Personally, I like 1% salt (by weight) - it's all a matter of taste.
