Hi All,

I've got a Rival Seal-a-meal from Eeztv shopping channel (Look on their website). I have Reber bags from Franco and they also work. The UK importer for Rival products is The Holmes Group (see below). I rang them and they sent me bags in a few days. Vaccum bags are etched with little channels on the inside that let you suck the air out even when the two sides of the bags collapse.

Cheers
Adam

I read somewhere that if you take a regular vacuum bag, and stick a thin strip of the special embossed vac bag down the length of the bag, then they work in the machines which require the embossed bags. Worth a try.

Now that is quite logical because there would still be somewhere for the air to escape.......

infact you would not want it the length of the bag but just enough to bridge the rubber seals around the vacuum trough....the air would escape and leave a vacuum and the broad sealer would seal the bag including the air bridge.

Ingenious.

All I need now is some heavy duty poly bags.....the Salter ones would be much cheaper than the Reber or Foodsaver....I must experiment.

Good on yuh Aris

Just a quick report to say that I have now given the vacuum sealer a good workout over the weekend. If anything was sealable it was sealed, much to Mrs Rs amusement.

Jens advise about rolling the bag towards the suction nozzle works well, though not always easy, as you are effectively one handed, the other operating the sealer. I also found that, if possible, squigging the contents about also help the vacuum. However, if the bag contents are liquid, care need to be taken that liquid is not drawn up to where the seal is to be made. There is a fine line between full air extraction and a ruined seal because it was wet.

I have yet to try Riks method but I think it should work well.

The other thing Kev....I always froze or chilled any liquids like soup before I
vacupacked them....you can always let them defrost to flatten out befor storing them flat in the freezer again.

Hi Kev,

You do get quite adept at rolling the bag with thumbs and forefingers whilst holding the lid down to expell air, it's a bit like a cowboy rolling a fag while riding a horse!
However, having tried Rik's mega good tip about cutting the hole in a sealed bag I will be doing that from now on as it works better.

Cheers

The one in Ashford is in a shopping arcade and opens for the normal arcade hours (8 till 6 or thereabouts).
