Hi,
first time post and looking to gather my equipement, I can get this mincer http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Brand-New-Meat-G ... dZViewItem for a fairly good price but was wondering if 1800watts is a good size for family use.
Could someone give me some advice as to the suitability of this mincer? I will only be doing a couple of kilos at a time.

Thanks for the help

Hi Andrew,

I don't see why you should have any problems with it, I have a similar sized machine from Kenwood and it copes with all of my sausagemaking activities well enough. Wouldn't want to use it for any commercial work but for us home users it should be fine.

Regards,
Richard

I find it hard to believe that machine can have an 1800W motor.
This one here is 150W
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/CUISINART-MG-100 ... dZViewItem

Franco's 0.8HP machine at 199.00 draws only 600W

Perhaps it means 180W?

My Mincer is 600W, it quite happily chomped its way through 11lbs of mince in a few minutes at the weekend, which I then turned into 6 dozen sausages, should keep most families happy for a few weeks

Hope thats helpful, Rob

My meat grinder is 550W, but it's also 120V, not 220V.

What's that formula for watts/volts/amps? 550/120=4.5 Amps
1800/220=8.1 Amps

Don't know what that has to do with anything, but 1800W should be plenty powerful enough.

That's what worries me, it looks like a perfectly reasonably cheap electric mincer which tend to have quite low wattages, up to about 600W, some as low as 150W. Better ones up to a thousand watts can be bought for 60 or so in the UK but to get 1800W you'd be looking at something like this with an industrial motor and a price tag to match:
http://www.sausagemaking.org/acatalog/P ... incer.html

I would double check the wattage as 1800W seems unlikely and 180W (if it was a simple case of adding too many zeros) puts it at the low end of the power spectrum and you might be better with a more powerful one.

Dave

Edit: To put things in perspective my Kenwood chef is 375 W and can labour a bit if you ask it to do too much at a time.

Definitely a good point. I'd hate to buy it and find that it really was 180W.

My 550W does pretty well, but any less wattage and I wouldn't be happy at all.

Could it be that they've used peak power quotations rather than average or RMS power figures (a bit like amplifier manufacturers do to make their stuff look more powerful than it actually is)?

I think they've stuck too many zeros in their quoted figures.

If I remember correctly from my radar days :-

Peak Power = 1.4x R.M.S.
and conversely
R.M.S. = 0.707x Peak Power

I too don't believe 1800 watts - even though that's clearly what is printed on the box...

The reason I'm dubious is that a motor actually pulling 1800 watts is going to generate pretty close to 1800 watts of heat, total, in the motor, mincer bearings and even some in the meat.
My toaster is rated at 1250 watts.
I don't think this thing looks like its capable of shedding that much heat.

But the current that the motor actually draws in use, (and hence the heat produced) depends upon the load it is asked to perform against.

So, it just might have a big motor, but only a small mincer - so small that it only imposed a load of ooooooh a couple of hundred watts or so...
That way, they'd be telling the honest truth. But it's be pretty irrelevant. :D

Thanks for all the advice guys, I will contact the seller and ask some questions, I have a feeling the 1800w is peak power but I will ask anyway.
On a side issue I made my first batch of sausages last night with a recipe from this site, Linconshire sausages. All the family agreed these were the best sausages they have ever tried :D looks like I am definately a convert, the flavour was fantastic, thanks heaps.

Cheers

My Kenwood 1500 had "1500W locked motor power" printed on it. Seems powerful enough for my use. I like to grind my meat frozen and so far it has not burned out on me yet. (I like to freeze my meat in trays, and then cut them into 1 inch strips before grinding)
It does produce quite some air movement and I can feel it blowing out quite strongly at the bottom of the mincer. Pretty loud too if you ask me.
Here's the pic.
