Because of my background, I can tell you that you may use either of 1) Heavy Mineral Oil, U.S.P., or Light Mineral Oil, N.F. They are pharmaceutical grade and fit for human consumption. Because of its weight Heavy Mineral Oil, U.S.P., available in most drugstores, should work just fine. Avoid the light stuff as a food additive, not because it is toxic, but because it is difficult to control when eliminated from the body. The light mineral oil works just fine as a honing oil when sharpening knives, etc., and would work just fine for rust proofing too. Personally, I use food grade silicone oil, available from the Sausagemaker, for storing cutter blades and plates. (U.S. terminology)
