MyWeigh KD-8000 digital scales

MyWeigh KD-8000

8kg capacity accurate to +/- 1 gram. Measures in kg, g, lb, oz, and a Baker's Percentage mode that allows one to weigh an ingredient (flour or meat, for instance) and then measure other ingredients as a percentage of that weight. I picked up one of these on Amazon for $44 with free shipping.

The manual says it doesn't need calibrating, but it can be calibrated, if you choose. You need to purchase a 5kg calibration weight, which costs more than the scales.

For calibration, look to your local gonvermental office of weights & measures. Scales in the US have to be certified as legal for trade by a state body who comes to your business and checks any scale that is used to charge customers. You may be able to go to an office near you and have it calibrated for free using their weights.

When I know my W&M inspector is coming in, I bring in my home scales and calibrate them using his weights. It's not a legal calibration that gets the certification, but it's good enough for home use.

For fine measures, I've been borrowing the grain scale from the arrow-making gear, but I recently picked up an American Weigh LB-501 compact bowl scale. 500 g x .01g, batteries or included A/C adapter, 2 x 200g calibration weights included. $48 including shipping.
