The courier services where you send/collect the package from a local drop off point can be very cheap.

If the numbers sharing are small, I think we should stick to the two basics, oak and beech, plus one other.

Cherry or apple would be my preference, but I'm happy to consider the others.

Yes, that's an alternative I was thinking about too.
We started a fledgling business many years ago (which burgeoned) & couriers became a way of life, i'll also keep an eye open for some seasonal deals via hukd over the next few days, but typically nothing beats the nearby shop drop off / collection on price since its inception.


Let us know Yotman as soon as you are able to what your preferences are & prospective weight, (& anyone else) we have time & space to bag & despatch so don't be shy folks.. a bag is often too expensive in one hit so lets see if we can take the pain away somewhat.

Hi Gus, Oak and Beech are fine. And yes, it's for a ProQ csg. I don't use the smoker that often but have a dry shed to store the dust. Initially I said 5kg, but I suppose it all depends on the couriers charges, whether they are charging for weight or volume (or both). See what prices the couriers are charging to work out which is most cost effective to obtain the optimum price.

Noted, & for the record (list) , I have just measured out in my clipseal bags a test batch, typically 350g per bag, though oak is considerably denser than beech, so will be reduced in weight to speed things up.

oK, Just looking at cheapest options based on my sending to a pick up point "UKSTH13215 Longridge Avenue, 44 St Helens, WA119BW" (Around 1.72 miles from your given postcode) ..CLICK & COLLECT inpost parcel locker.

Their lockers largest size is 38cm height x 38cm width x 64cm depth which dependent on price is what we'd work on in this test...

I will see what I can allegedly fit to chck if this is viable & at what cost.

FWIW, for 35cm x 35cm x 60cm weighing 10kg, I'm seeing prices as low as £1.79 for 'drop off at store, deliver to address'. 10kg's similar. That's with INPOST. Others are around £7 - £8. Given that it's not being bough today, I'd use the £7 - £8 as a 'representative cost'. I got those from Interparcel - www.interparcel.com if you want to see the options for yourself.

Given that 5kg of dust from 'Hotsmoked' is £34, and that unless it's tripled in cost, even 15kg of the dusts that you want (oak/beech) are only about a tenner from Ashwood, it can't help but save you money.

As per getting to grips with this way of despatch & looking at the lockers HWD (of which the package needs to fit within & be accessible) the individual bags leave too many air gaps where a solid layer of dust would fill nooks & crannies, so I need to look at bags that won't taint or have been out long enough to lose any production smells etc & possibly compressed a but... different layers for different dusts naturally bagged separately.

The immediately obvious downside to this is the box or a piercing compared to individual boxes, but that again is why you always sign for an item as unchecked / U/C to make sure you can claim if upon opening an item is trashed by a courier.

This is an aspect of a collection service that needs to be checked out... i'll give em a call.

Gus, I'm happy to meet you at a mutually agreed time at Ashwoods. So that would only leave Yotman's and any A.N.Others to courier.

With regard to Yotman's, it's only a tenner for the proper collect/deliver service, or if it's only 5kg that Yotman wants, Hermes is only about £5.50 for the full service.

How much beech and oak do you want Gus? I'm happy to take a full bag of each to split between me and my mate, Maurice - assuming they're a similar price to what you paid last time. However, If you don't want to have the rest of the beech/oak that Yotman doesn't want, I'm also happy to split the bags 4 ways. How much was in your bags? IIRC, my original ones were 15kg. Would ¼ of that be enough for you?

I see the apple and/or cherry wood differently, they're much more expensive (although IIRC the bags had 5kg more in them) Both Maurice and I am up for either apple/cherry if there's at least two more people up for it. I reckon that ¼ bag of either of those will be about the same price as a full bag of beech or oak, about £10. That's a massive saving on Hotsmoked and ProQ's price. At a push. if there's only three of us, I'll take the extra share and sell it on Ebay.

That's an excellent selection of woods they sell Dave. More pricey than Ashwoods, but more variety. Do you know if they sell dust suitable for the CSG? They only mention 'chips' on their site.
