Liquid, (other than Apple juice)

Liquid, (other than Apple juice)

Postby GUS » Tue Apr 28, 2015 4:01 pm

I like apple juice, however I rarely remember to buy some in advance of bbq etc..

Therefore I'm often scrabbling around for an alternative when an impulse buy subsequently necessitates juice.

However we do typically have 1.5 litre fruit & veg juice mix which the nipper loves (courtesy of lidl) which is sweet, yet light in flavour.

"Solevita" vitamin juice drink from concentrates,

OJ 19%
Sugar
Carrot juice 7%
Lemon juice 5%
cherry juice 1%

Anyone used it? ..any reason not to?
I'm a big fan of availing myself of a proper juice bar when flying long haul as part of the flight de-tox, but haven't tried it out for any cooking purposes, however it is a lot more palateable & refreshing than some of the sickly apple juice concentrates out there, ...which seem to be the "go to" ..presumably due to sticky /sweetness combo reducing to a handy glaze or cheap sweetner ingredient.

Would like to get my head around it if anyone can enlighten me as to apple juice, & what other formats have been used amongst forum members, (such as cloudy pressed apple)!?
I'm tempted to pulp & strain a few carrots. & use it on some ribs.

(sometimes I wish I could simply stop thinking & follow a bloody recipe straight out of a book)

I've used orange juice in a sauce for ribs. Are you looking for a rib mop or a juice to add to a sauce?

Any liquid at all really, ..just wondering what has been used successfully beyond gloopy concentrate..

In order to see how it handles, & avoid costly meaty mistakes.
For instance, the tymbark range (I used to quaff loads of it before it came to the uk) the mint & apple is divine, as is the cherry mix which i've no doubt would imbue a nice alternative flavour if you were able to enhance it without smothering the flavour.

cranberry, pineapple, grapefruit, & the little known speciality mixes folk may have resorted to in a hurry & been pleasantly surprised at...anything! ..hehe, even an energy drink (god forbid)

So, any liquid really, either on it's own or a reduction combination for a slather / mop sauce.

Beer is useful for many things along these lines in cooking.
it has required sweetness, without too much
(being a homebrewer) it is always available
using it offers a good excuse to open one up
it adds a depth of flavours to many things

I'm clearly going to have to try that lidl juice mix now on a small pork joint au naturel.
