Monitoring Meat & Smoker Temperature

I am in the process of building both a hot and a cold smoker and want to monitor the temp of both the smoker and the meat.

How do you do this?

I have seen this:
ET 73 Maverick 2 Probe Smoker Thermometer

Has anyone got any experience of these? They don't seem to be available in the UK so I would have to buy from the US - probably from the ebayer linked. Anyone know whether I would have to pay tax on it or have experience of importing other smoker/curing/sausagemaking products from the US?
Cheers

Phil

Phil,

Just got one of these, ordered on 22/12/07, despatched on 24/12/07 and arrived on Monday no duty or tax :D cost 29.50.

I used it for the first time yesterday on some smoked polish & spanish sausages.
It's very easy to use, so far there's only 2 minor niggles.
1 you have to remove the battery compartment cover on the transmitter to turn it On/Off.
2 setting the Hi/Lo temps is a slow slow process.

Apart from those niggles it's great, I've had a Weber single probe wireless thermometer for a couple of years now and the Maverick is much much better.
Apart from it's two probes it has a wider & higher temp range and the facility to set your own alarm temps both for smoker and meat is a great help.

PS Bought from the same guy as per your link

The mavericks are nice...I own a couple....the only problem is sometimes it loses its transmisson...the distance isn't as good as advertised...other than that they work great...you might want to order some extra probes while you are at it.

I put one of them on my to buy list next time I go south. I have a temp probe but its not a transmtter . I still have to be within earshot of my alarm. I need to upgrade. LOL

I use 1 remote and 1 hard wired, but if starting from scratch the dual probe sounds like the way to go.

Be sure to follow the cleaning instructions... do not submerge the wires.
The maverick is a great unit, the only weakness is the probes and being in the UK, you will struggle to replace a damaged one (mines running on 1, until I can get another). It may be best to order a couple of spare probes with it.

I ordered my Maverick from this guy. He says all 50 states but if you contact him he may work you out a deal on over seas shipping. Let him know I sent ya. Wolfe Rub dot com

Just a note about additional costs if customs handle the package in the UK. My PO charged an 8 handling fee on top of c5 tax.

I was lucky I guess, I had no extra charge.

After the fee was it dearer than the one sold in the UK? (I'm aware that exchange rates are not exactly in our favour at the moment)

erm I didn't realise I could get one from a UK based company.

I have had them in the past without interception. I thought the PO charge was a bit steep. Price was c40 with the UK handling on top.

Good machine so far.
