Weather-proofing a wooden cold smoker

Weather-proofing a wooden cold smoker

Postby Wilbur » Sun Aug 17, 2008 9:08 am

Hi,

I'm a complete beginner but I'm in the process of building a cold smoker out of untreated wood (pine). It will be 90cms square and just over 2.1m high. As its going to be in the garden I want to weatherproof the outside of it but I'm just wondering if I need to be concerned about (a) whether or not that's a good idea at all and (b) food contamination.

My thoughts are that provided I only seal the outside and only use it for cold smoking I should be okay.

Any thoughts gratefully received.

I have thought about this before - if/when I decide to build a cold smoker, My thoughts were to use a small treated garden shed - like 4' x 5' - then clad the inside with untreated pine, with a separate firebox on the outside using a large diameter pipe between the two.

Just a thought. There is some good info here:

Thanks Aris, I could probably line my smoke house internally with pine to keep an air gap between the outside and the inside. I'll give that a go and let you know how I get on.
