Weather-proofing a wooden cold smoker

Hi,
I'm a complete beginner but I'm in the process of building a cold smoker out of untreated wood (pine). It will be 90cms square and just over 2.1m high. As its going to be in the garden I want to weatherproof the outside of it but I'm just wondering if I need to be concerned about (a) whether or not that's a good idea at all and (b) food contamination.
My thoughts are that provided I only seal the outside and only use it for cold smoking I should be okay.
Any thoughts gratefully received.
Wilbur
