Has anyone tried peat as a smoking fuel, it obversely was used years ago to smoke cured meat , but can we still use it or is it not as good as the alternatives we have these days, are there advantages with it or not :roll: Gaz

There is a company in one of the Uists which peat smokes salmon, sea trout and ?scallops. I've tasted the salmon. Very, very good.

Ok I have found a supply of 12.kg peat briquettes for solid fuel fires for £4.05 :D

Unfortunately you have to buy them on a pallet of 84 at a time from Stirling which is £340 :lol: :lol: :lol:

Or I can get smaller numbers for £3.50 each delivered on their own pallet for £49.50 from Somerset...

Anyone near Gwent, Monmouthshire or Devon may be able to find a local stockist.

I've used peat, but it wasn't to my liking.
Met with the owner of this site http://www.irishsmoke.ie/products1.htm really nice guy, so would recommend buying from him.

When i was growing up in Dublin in the late 60's nearly everyone had a open fires and used coal and peat to heat homes.
I have to say I would never use peat for smoking, it has a vile smell and I would probably have horrible flashbacks of poorer times.
Not for me but maybe for someone else...but I do remember the vile smell.
