Cure#1 vs Saltpetre?

Possibly a question directed more towards our Brit contingent??, to those that would know (probably the older of us!) does bacon taste better having been cured with cure#1 or the old fashioned saltpetre?

Some would say so.

I don't use it very often and think that quality of meat, and maturing after curing, have a greater effect. For some reason I always use it when making smoked bacon: don't ask me why - I just do.
