Vac Sealer

Postby sundodger » Sun Nov 17, 2013 11:08 am

Hi Guys - Going to shell out for a simple vac sealer & wishing to support this site, have looked at what's available. The two on sale are the Reber salvapresa & the other I can't quite make out, as not specified. However from the pic. it looks like a Clatronic unit? (Cheap!) Anyone on here had experience with these ones on offer? If so your expert advices would be very much appreciated.

I got mine from Andrew James Worldwide. It's the only one I've used, but seems to be doing a fine job so far.

Have typically found the Andrew James kit to be re-badged & inflated prices, for instance their meat / bread slicer used to be a £15 argos special, ditto the Giles & posner.

Hope that doesn't come across as sounding harsh, merely my experience from crossmatching generic kit available in this field via the industrious Chinese market.

My own was from eBay at a cost of £50 maybe, numerous years ago when I hit an auction at an opportune moment. ..get yourself some adhesive Teflon strip to keep it running with minimal bag glitching across the seal, (where the adhesive Teflon rides up over time)

Doh! As well as the vac sealer, I bought the meat grinder, and meat/bread slicer from there. The grinder is superb, and I'd highly recommend it for an amateur hobbyist. The slicer, not so much; it doesn't have a shelf on the back to catch the cuts, and the build quality is questionable.

IS the sealer diamond embossed sealer bag capable!?

This often denotes the power / ability / suction of a sealer (& thus it's repetetive cycles between cool-down)

How it seals & stays sealed without blowing the vacuum, how it survives (or not) in a freezer being moved unceremoniously around repeatedly.

the almost regular poly bag capable vacs are just pish (imho) & like purchasing budget sushi, or quorn when you really want steak.

less messing around with the diamond seal emboss capable bags & machines (verging on light professional use) & worth the outlay.

I got lucky & bought mine when no-one else was bidding many years back, for £50 from fresherpack 's ebay account, the unit with the "wet & dust" catcher on the undersideof the machine, good kit.

If not on franco's site then check out weschenfelder for diamond bags.

Personally, i'd send it back within your 14 days (or whatever), they have $od all use & resell value.

As for the grinder, I hav no experience of that sort of unit, we have a kenwood KM010 with stainless steel bowl, glass blender, sausage / kebbe maker attachment, as it has a little footprint compared to multiple units, & encourages other uses frequently.

(most partners can be convinced pretty easily to purchase a posh blender / mixer unit, & the upper echelon kenwoods are easy to resell, maintain, fix, purchase add on's for.

Just remember, your grinder unit & discs are likely aluminium, need washing & treating (re-oiling) with care between uses, NOT DISHWASHER SAFE.

The grinder attachments / plates are all stainless steel. I made sure I did my research there :P

The vac sealer description also states that "The machine is compatible with any size of vacuum sealer bags or rolls which are the best quality channelled/embossed bag and rolls on the market today." I'm using the rolls, so I can cut them to the sizes I require. They're not cheap, but they look to be exceedingly robust.

The missus has been talking about getting a KitchenAid for a while, but they seem so overpriced to me I couldn't justify it. The grinding attachment costs more than the complete mincer + attachment set I bought, and has far worse reviews!

Thanks for the weschenfelder tip though - It's always good to have another sausage related store to peruse

Ok, that's good to know.

& i'm very pleased to hear it is embossed / diamond pattern capable, making your own size bags saves a lot of expense if you work it out properly, hardly a chore when you know what is going into it!

Don't be mean with the excess for a bag, it gets awkward when you don't give it enough spare space within the overall vac bag size.
