photo size limits?

What's the best size for a photo? I just resized a pic down to 400x300 and it still doesn't fit in my pos width wise. could be me or photobucket cause it didn't seem to change at all.
I know I've seen the size limits posted here someplace, but can't seem to find them when I need them.

This is 600px wide and seems to fit OK.

The picture in question was the sausage and bun in my rookworst post, the original pic was so big only half of it showed, but apparently the size change happened only after I got frustrated and gave up. Thanks again for the reply Phil.
