Postage/VAT

Postby saucisson » Mon May 15, 2006 5:04 pm

First go today and my first cheese ever :)

Vegeren bought from from Tescos today (sure enough when I thought to look the expiry date was April 2006!). I used a quarter teaspoon, it's setting nicely. I used a whole carton of buttermilk in a gallon by mistake  but we'll see. Where do people buy real Rennet?

Dave

Apologies if this should be in chat.

From what I see Moorlands are a bit more expensive than Ascott.

I think the Kit from Ascott is good value but if you get individual bits you can save money and get more equipment to suit your needs.

Anyone tried calling Ascott to see if they would ship smaller items for less?

The high postage from Ascott is to encourage you to spend more so that you are justifying the postage costs..........

Of course if they wanted to they could send you some culture for the cost of a stamp and a bubble envelope.

The sooner that Franco sell his stuff and keeps to his POST FREE methods then the more he will sell.

It is sound business practice to give the incentive of free postage because if there is a choice then the obvious one is the free postage .

I got a basket of about 40 quids worth of stuff on the internet and thee was no postage charge from Ascott. I didn't complete the order because Work closed to internet connection "for essential maintenance" so I 'm not sure hwhen they were going to add the postage on.

,
Another thing with some of these that annoy me is you get to the end of your list and you have spent 50 odd and then they add on the VAT of 6 and the postage and insurance another 12 and you end up paying nearly 70.

It rather takes the micky at times.....I know VAT ain't their fault but you think they would show it in the price before hand as the price they are actually charging and you have to pay.

A few years ago, we had a problem with the tax authorities that wouldn't allow us to show prices including VAT on some items on the restaurant menu and obliged us to on others.... It was a complete farce for 2 years until someone decided to tick all the boxes and alow us to show an all inclusive price accross the board.

Not sure what the law is in this country, but I know on some mail order fishing sites, they leave the VAT off and Shipping off so they can get up the rankings on "best price finder" websites...

I must agree Rik, I think Franco has it about right on that score. Advertised as free postage but obviously recouped on the actual price. It lets you know exactly where you stand with the cost.
