How about a few nice bread machine recipes jenny?

I too have a cheapie which I pull out every so often - works a treat, and the kids think it is marvelous when we add all odd bits of chocolate buttons, smarties, and raisins which are always floating about from birthday parties and easter.

Another recomendation:"McGee on Food & Cooking, an encyclopedia of kitchen science, history and culture," by Harold McGee.

Buy one of these and become the next Heston Blumenthal. No recipes, but you'll find out a lot of "why do that?" stuff. Exellent.

I used to work for a museum and spent many an quiet hour reading the contents of the book stand. Notably 'We'll Eat Again' by Marguerite Patten, try taking the centre out of a baking potato lengthwise with an apple corer, and stuffing the hole with your best home made sausage, wrap in foil and bake. Just one of the wartime treats on offer.
Jane Austen's aunt wrote a cook book full of everyday good housewifery of the time, and a guy called Stuart Peachey(he did a recent TV programme where a bunch of archeaologist took to the hills, somewhere near the Wye by the looks of it, and tried to live a Tudor/Stuart existence for a farming year) he wrote a series of short booklets, largely concerning the Civil war, which included recipes of the time to feed the New Model Army. I remember these included 'A salad of rocket', very healthy!

I'm near the end of the Jane Grigson "English Food" book that I mentioned elswhere. It's worth getting it for the section on pies alone. Buy one :!:

actually, I have never noticed that, it does say I am in Derby, can't think why, I've never lived there.
Any idea how to change that, I have looked at my account and can't see where it is getting the Derby thing from

Ah, I read it wrong then, sorry. I just thought it extremely funny that I searched for it, clicked on that one copy and got a this item is no longer available, sold to moggy message come up.

I'll find another copy :D
