Has anyone ever grown Chillies in a flower pot on a window sill?
If so, what's involved as I would be interested in having a go at this.

I grew some in a greenhouse last year, no harder to grow than tomatoes, a lot easier as you just let it do it's own thing. Wilf has his own website dedicated to chillies:

Table-top (pot grown) ornamental peppers do quite well indorrs or out. They are usually edible, too. Edible, but really, really hot. Any pepper should do well, I'd think.

Many years ago, I grew an ornamental pepper and tasted (only) one.

I grow chillis most of the time on the window sill as the plants can last for a few years that way.
I currently have:
Medusa (small and very mild but well flavoured)
Various Habanero (hot and fantastic smoked)
and Scotch Bonnet (like a squat Habanero but with a distinct flavour)

I get the occasional fruit in winter, which is a nice bonus.
Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus.

Can you give me an idiots guide to growing these in such conditions, when to sow...thinning, harvesting etc....
Are the seeds from chillies I would buy in a shop ok to use...?

I massively patronised my 4 year daughter by letting her plant some water melon seeds from a water melon so she could have water melons to eat this year, like that would ever happen :roll:. The plants are now taking over the dining room :lol:

My six year old brought home a book about peanuts two weeks ago week so as joke I planted some peanuts from a bag of christmas nuts, guess what; we have peanut plants as well.

Don't start me on the forest of ginger corms :roll:

Plant anything and see what happens :wink:

Two/three seeds per pot in early March, thin out to strongest seedling when around 2 inches tall.
Keep on sunny window sill, keep moderately moist but do not allow to dry out.
Harvest fruits whenever they grow (I think harvesting encourages more growth)
Feed with a tomato type feed when fruit are growing.

That's pretty much it (they're not rocket science)

As far as using seeds from shop bought chillies is concerned, it's probably OK but bear in mind that some of these are hybrids and may not grow the same chilli type as the parent.

Just planted my jalapinos and everything else outside, given the forecast I don't think there's much risk they'll dry out :roll: I just hope there's no frost as they aren't undercover yet, that's phase two.

Yes, unfortunately, there was a ground frost as recently as Monday night, but I'm hoping we should be OK from now.

Just caught up with this as been away for a while......

The ornamenal chillis are best grown in pots on a windowsill, but most only give a searing type of heat but not much flavour, usually about a foot high or so, you can grow other types but they may try and get too big but can be cropped as they grow to smaller sizes.....a Jalapeno plant can reach 3 - 4 foot grown in the ground in a greenhouse.
Plant in March/April earlier if it looks a good Spring (somehope in this country now, we've just had 2 bad years in a row) 2 seeds in a small plug and then transplant to a 50cm pot when a few true leaves are forming, and then 4-6 inches can go into a 2 litre pot on the windowsill, feed as tomatoes to get a better crop also a good potting compost does make a difference.

My wife grows loads of chillis in a small outside plot, south facing next to the house. Not a great amount this year but in 2007 she had hundreds of the things, yellow red and green. I cant stand the things at all, but being Thai she loves them. She starts them off in egg boxes then transfers them out in Mid May-June
