As I understand it, potato varieties which succeed in NW Europe don't do well in the tropics. Too much foliar growth, not enough tuber growth. Places like Egypt get around this by growing what are essentially winter spuds. Cooler weather. Perhaps there are varieties which suit hot weather. Perhaps growing at altitude would help.

P.s. If you hack saw your tyres (on both sides) at the point where the reinforcenent starts, and then turn them inside out, you get more cropping area per tyre. But you take your chances with carcinogens.
