Building a new cooker.

Postby Dr. Sweetsmoke » Thu Apr 23, 2009 2:07 pm

Thanks

The doors are manageable and I considered counter weights during the build but when they were attached we found them easy to work with.
I will be adding small handles to the ends of the doors though.
Doing the first cook in it right now over at the pub so I'll post pictures soon after. 8)

After the build was finished she was loaded with untreated lumber and two bags of coal, set alightand once she got going the shelf and grates were tossed in for a good paint removal and cleaning. Once the fire was raging I bolted the doors shut and opend the intakes full bore so the doors wouldnt worp. Once the paint started flaking I took a wire brush and a putty knife to it. Hours later came the flap wheel on the grinder then a tack cloth. Started applying a dusting ofhigh temp paint while still warm.

The next day after cleaning the inside she was given a coat of oil for seasoning, a bag of lump and some nice white oak for curing. After the cure I drank cider ibetwen coats of BBQ paint till she was covered. 8) I did all the burning and painting behind the local pub.

Curing is not an exact science... So it's not a sin to bin.

For sure ... I'd love something like this on a much smaller scale. Did I notice the plastic mud guards starting to warp a bit?

I must do a search and see if anyone has ideas, plans, or pics of a smaller version.

We had a BBQ for our lunch and it was great, economical as I cut my own firewood and just top the fire off with a little charcoal.

Cheers

Poker- let me know what you are after and I'll help you all I can.

It did get a bit tough sometimes working behind the pub on a sunny afternoon and I often found myself a bit more giggly and wobbly by the end of the day.

Oh and ya the mud guards melted on the inside but not to worry I'm working on some made of diamond plate to replace them. 8)

It wasn't a tough build and we wanter to get it done and cooked on in time to hit some of these summer events. I have a guy working on the decals and banner for it. Now it's time to source a gazebo and three folding tables plus plenty of smoke wood.

You can find smaller bowser's at farm auctions plus I would start looking at businesses that have or are getting ready to shut down and inquire about air tanks. If you have a factory of some sort near by go and see the guys in the shop and they may have something you need that's ready for the scrap yard. I just found two large air compressor tanks that would make great smokers but I don't have time to build them at the moment.

That is a beautifully built smoker Dr. Sweetsmoke. I've built and own a good selection myself but none look quite as clean and nicely done as that. Congrats and thanks for sharing.
That is a very deep cut.

My drums.

There are a few things you need to be careful of for your build but the UDS is the easiest and cheapest smoker you can get/make.
