I have a few more things to do to it but nothing as far as making it cookable. We planned another cook this Sunday but this time we are adding a few racka of ribs to the mix. I want to try a few things before I set sail with this one so pray for some sunshine. 8) I have built others like it so it's very straight forward.

Ahhh yes the UDS I have two of them. BTW Browser is a friend if mine.

There are a few things you need to be careful of for your build but the UDS is the easiest and cheapest smoker you can get/make.


Hi Doc, yes thats what I'm gonna try ... I've been reading up a bit, can you share your experiences so I benefit from your past mishaps?

Like I say I got a nice clean drum and I'm looking for some expanded metal for the rack and the burner.

BTW I like the black stuff Harp!

I'm struggling to find a therm at the moment anyone know where I can get a cheap one.

Likewise, I have found a US supplier that will ship at reasonable cost:

The only other alternative seems to be to use a ProBbq meat thermometer:

But as to how good the probe is when it's not inserted in something is anyone's guess.

Hopefully, someone will come up with a supplier.

There is no down side to th UDS other than if you are stead fast on a water bowl you will have to get creative. I know a great guy that uses a large flower pot base in his.

I get my thermos from eBay , the supplier is in the US but they are VERY FAST. Let me know if you want to order any and we may be able to get a package deal. I need three more real soon.

Order a 22.5" Weber kettel grate from Weber or ebay. They fit perfectly and that's what everyone uses.

The probe is fine and very accurate I use it all the time.


Remember never buy a cheap thermo your success depends on it. lol

Thanks for the link Dave ... I hadn't found anything. I see it says for the gas BBQ so I'm left wondering if it will be suitable for the charcoal type?

Thanks Doc for the offer of joining you in a purchase of therms, perhaps it would be a lot of trouble for you and very little saving going by the price that Dave found one at?

There are two sets of grills, one are cooking grills, the other charcoal grills at almost half the price! Will the charcoal grill do the job of being a cooking grill?

Yes.


Please remember not to make the build of s UDS complicated. That's the beauty of it all right there.

You need the 57 CM grate for placing the food on. If you choose to go through the trouble of making one then ...

For the fuel basket get some expanded steel and wrap it around a smaller grill and wire tie together.

Salvaging the parts from 22" (57CM) Weber is the best bet.
-use the lid on your drum
-use the food grate four your food
-use the smaller grate ( charcoal grate) for making your basket.

If you don't or can't get a cheap/used Weber the apply the same principals to you build as stated above but with other items.

Do not use anything that is galvanized, stay with stainless , black steel etc.

I'm after a thermometer to fix into my smoker door - just for quick reference as I also use a Maverick Wireless Dual Meat/Smoker thermometer. Having a thermometer (maybe) lower down in the door will give the opportunity to monitor the temp at two places in the smoker.

I don't :)

I was hunting for a UK supplier of Grill thermometers for those that couldn't find one. They were easy enough to find in the US but that was the only one I could find in the UK.

Regrettably, this product 'slots into' the lid of a bbq. There is no retaining nut.

The ProQ, may be better for my purpose, or geting the proper job from the US.

Both /all of you.lol

The thermo that you are looking for is not what you need.

You want one of these for mounting ourside the cooker to monitor temps.

The one you are loking at is for sticking into the food to read internal temps.

Then you want either a Thermapen or some other therm ( the one you were looking at) to check the internal.

I already have a thermapen and digital wireless dual meat and smoker thermometer.

I beg to differ DrS, it's the one they fit to their gas barbecues. That's why it's calibrated up to 550 deg F/ 288 deg C. People have been quite ingenious at getting it to fit other BBQs http://virtualweberbullet.com/moretherm.html :lol:

The food one available here http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000 ... d_i=468294 which maybe the one you are thinking of only goes up to 110 deg C.

That said the one you linked to would be much better for the purpose, because you can bolt it in place and forget it.
