Looks like a brilliant idea.There is a German in my area that uses a metal trough which is lit on one end.He has holes drilled in the base for air.Does this unit have mesh underneath?

Yes its a wire frame work with fine mesh walls and floor. I can take a close up if you'd like,

A bag of planings are in the post, approximately 150g. Sent them 1st class, so you should have em by Easter.

Good review Dave. It looks like it should sell well.

Looking at it logically, I really wanted something to utilise the oak planings and chippings (also incorporates some dust), and I doubt this will do the trick. Didn't want to go down the road of spending hours grinding it all to dust as their's 2 industrial bin bags full.

You indicate that you are going to grind the planings sent by Rich, any chance you could use the remainder to see if it will smoulder OK using it 'as is'? I, for one, would be interested in the result. I will say that in a baking tray (no air holes below) it needs the heat source for continuous smoulder.

That's the plan, to grind 100g to dust as one batch and use the remaining 50g as they come for a second run. If (when?) it goes out I can break it up progressively until it does burn and come up hopefully with the maximum suitable size.

The face of the woman at the post office when I posted them was a picture - she tried to get the envelope through the little slot at the bottom of the counter and got it wedged, she looked even more confused when I said it was sawdust!

Nice vacuum sealing rich, which one do you have?

Looking at your shavings I wonder if they will work as is anyway, they are much finer than I expected.

I'll stick with the original plan though.

100g went down to 300ml on grinding in my coffee grinder an approx 3 fold reduction in volume from as is.

The dust wouldn't catch at all, so I dried it in the oven at 220 deg C for any hour and it burnt perfectly, a bit faster than the supplied dust I estimate it burnt for about 8 hrs. Drying the "as is" chippings didn't work, it would flash burn across the surface but not deep smoulder. So your chippings work Rich if you grind them down to a third of the original volume and oven dry them thoroughly.

I'll post some pics of the dust and my kippers later...

Hmmmm kippers! :P

I just got back from a Chilli fest up in South Lakes and these people had a stall.... http://www.polsco.co.uk/

They had two very tall, portable cold smokers that were packed to the gunnels with kippers...they were smoking over oak & beech. They were doing 3 pairs (is it a 'brace'? :wink: ) for five quid, which i thought was very reasonable. Can you guess what I'm having for breakfast tomorrow?

Although, when I get one of these baby's that Dave has been reviewing I'll be able to do my own!
