I suppose if you had a shed and some tools you could make something simular, perhaps a steel pipe of around 2in with holes drilled in the top and fill half way up the sides of the pipe and heat one end, so you have basically a trough of sawdust, it might work
Theres got to be people with sheds out there that can come up with other ideas on the cheap
Wot about a small roasting tin with a heat source in the corner, crunch up some tin foil to make channels and youve got a near enough cheap version of the new cold smoker

The cheese was a suces, although I think it delivers smoke at a slower rate than the bean can did, so it could have done with a little longer.

3 hours and it had only got to the second corner. Put some of the oak planings through the coffee grinder, they look good and seem to burn well, just had a call from a mate from the pub who has got me a bin bag full of oak dust from some furniture factory he knows.

@ Tinca - there have been a few of us playing with the concept over the last couple of years, and in my opinion this is the simplest of all of themm well worth the money.

It's still going at this time of night, that's nearly 10 hours. I can't believe it, I can smoke meat and go to the pub and sleep. Who'd have thought it?

On the other-hand, I've tried grinding the fine wood chippings in the coffee grinder and reckon that buying the sawdust will be cheaper than buying a new coffee grinder!

As my nephew would say, 'I feel like the pooch's privates!'

Reminds me of a couple of weeks ago when i whizzed up the last of my toms, i took the blender container off and the bottom fell out , wifey was not amused

Just a quick update on Ashwood Smoking chips at Kettering. I called in today and prices for certified food grade wood dust were:

Beech 15kg £8.95
Oak 15kg £9.95
Whisky Barrel wood 25kg £25 (ish)
Hickory 25kg £25 (ish)
Apple 25kg £35
Cherry 25kg £35

As the smoker uses 100gm for a ten hour smoke that's 1500 hours smoking for £10. I make that 2 months continuous smoking for a tenner. Maybe buying two bags was overkill!
