Lidl white bread flour

All about bread

Dan,
As previously posted there are not many Brits baking their own bread, however like real ale, real bread has gone thru a resurgence in the past few years.
Phil, I've missing a few teeth as well, but that doesn't stop me attempting to chew a home made malted Granary

I think he means the 1 kilo ready to use bags of variety breads that you just add water to :)

Yea i think you'll right Dave, it could have been on offer, our lidil was doing the bread mixes for 59p/Kg last week.

Lidl Flour

Postby covlocks » Tue Oct 19, 2010 4:19 am

I used Lidil flour once, until I discovered that it is not all flour, and the taste is massively inferior.

If you want to make good bread then you use good quality flour, otherwise you are making nothing better than the Tesco Value Bread at pennies per loaf.

The flour I use is expensive, but taste and texture is excellent in comparrison. I didn't come to that conclusion just by being a flour snob, I used the same recipe for many different flours before I picked the one that I use now. Locally milled, no bulking agents, plenty of choice and delivered to my door.

Hi Covlocks

Sounds good. Who is the miller/supplier? Will they deliver to Shropshire? If you don't want to "advertise" on the open forum please could you pm me?

Thanks

Thanks Covlocks

The range looks good but is somewhat similar to that available from Shipton Mill, but rather more expensive (eg Organic White bread flour £18.06 + £8.95p+p compared to £15.50 delivered; Organic wholemeal spelt £2.98 & white spelt £3.90 compared to Shipton Mill's £1.75 and £1.95 respectively).

Did you try Shipton Mill when you were searching for a good flour?

Shipton Mill

Postby covlocks » Tue Oct 19, 2010 12:21 pm

To be honest once I used Claybrooke, and it was fairly local so I could go there for small quantities, I looked no further.

I shall look at Shipton Mill. Its a case of weighing up the total package with carriage etc. Its good to use real flour from a mill though - its like chalk and cheese when comparing bread quality.

Hi Oddley I use this most of the time.

http://www.gilchesters.com/product-whole-spelt.htm

I use a variety of sweeteners muscavado, honey, maple syrup and sometimes molasses.
Doves farm do a wholemeal spelt but IMO not as nice as the gilchesters.

Is that the actual flour or a ready-mix?
