Thanks for the reminder Dave, yes I think you are right, best avoid that, plenty of better ones available.

The other one that I am not sure about is if the turkey oak can be used like common oak, so I shall give that a miss, I think, till I run out of the other more certain ones.

I think that the CSG oak from Macs is from Germany originally - so some form of European oak - if that helps?

The bulk pack from Mac's works out at 40p (ish) per smoke - it hardly breaks the bank!

I've just been looking at Mac's site again and the "large" pack says enough for 50 hours for £4.35ex, which is nearer £1ish for a 10hr smoke, have I missed a "bulk" pack ?
or am I having a brain failure

12kg for £50 delivered. Oops, I missed the vat (sorry! ), so £58.75 for 12kg.

I make one full smoke to be 100g (0.1kg).

So 12 / 0.1 = 120 full smokes.

£58.75 / 120 = 49p per smoke. (inc vat)

I guess it depends whether you want (or can get permission from the household authorities!) to spend £50 on sawdust!

Where did you see 6x500g ?
All I see is

1 x Large pack of each wood variety.

and below it describes 6 wood types

I dont like these "large" and "up to 50" type adverts , a bit of nitty gritty and simple presentation without all the graphics and "also boughts" would bring clarity, especially when one is on dialup "Large bag of manure 50p" is often seen by the roadside, well large to me is what our 3 pigs produce, and that fills a field

Well Red Oak is a common name for the N.American oak Quercus rubra.
not to be confused with our native Pedunculate (Q. robur) and Sessile (Q. petraea) oaks

I may be mis-informed, but I understood that Mac used Ashwoods products. In which case they (Ashwood) told me that their oak was from Germany.

I'm hoping that Mac will reply for himself. However, given the costs of other smoking processes, he ain't exactly ripping you off.

The cost to run a CSG is minimal even if you buy the wood in small quantities, and all the woods are the same price - which means that the 'luxury' ones are a cheap product.

If you don't believe me, look at the cost of cold smoking in a Bradley.

I guess that you've never tried to cold smoke with the alternatives? Outside in the rain every couple of hours, freezing cold, and cussin' like a trooper.

No thanks, I'll stick with my low cost CSG. Even at the price for small packs, it's cheaper than many alternatives and the cost savings make it well worth while. (OK, that's poetic licence as I buy in bulk!).

You could always arrange for a courier to pick up a sack for you from a bulk supplier.

However, I'm still hoping that Mac, a forum member, will offer the EU deal to UK members.

Sorry for all the confusion, my head also hurts.
I will definitly be doing a "bulk pack" for the UK, but it'll have to wait until Monday, when I'm at my computer with all site files on.
The Oak does come from Germany... I'll try to find out exactly which species it is on Monday too.
