Importing from EU

Where to buy, how to use. Stuffers, casings, spices, grinders, etc.

Importing from EU

Postby korky » Thu Apr 11, 2013 10:12 am

Has anyone tried importing a meat grinder or sausage stuffer from the EU?

Looking at brand new on Italian and French ebay from 100% positive feedback sellers, prices seem to be good, even allowing for £30 or so delivery.

Am considering a no.12 Tre Spade mincer. I know the plug will need an adaptor. Warranty will be awkward to make good on. Any other problems people can foresee? Because the prices are considerably attractive otherwise...

As long as the prices include local VAT there are no problems. As you say with warranty £30each way shipping is prohibitive. You may be able to get spare parts and self fit.
Any chace of a link or 2? many thanks.

So for instance from D'Audino (www.daudino.it) the Trespade no.22 is EUR299, add EUR35 for delivery (I emailed the guy who runs the shop to get this rate, and I he also confirmed it was inclusive of tax) it comes to EUR334 which comes out at GBP284 (depending on your bank and commission rates). That's quite a bit less than some wesbites in the UK.

Italian for mincer is 'tritacarne', stuffer is 'insaccatrice' (that's my Italian vocab exhausted now...) and the ebay is of course ebay.it

Most listings seem to include shipping options only to Italy, but if you drop the seller an email I've found they'll do it do about EUR30-35.

I have used lots of UK equipment abroad with just a plug adapter. Pretty sure the EU regs require cross-compatibility. I'm not 100% certain but the interweb seems to agree. http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=478179

That guy kurt on ebay must be the highest price I've seen for a Trespade 22. He charges £445. Weschenfelders is £372.

If you go to the USA, things are different with high powered stuff, you often need a transformer as well.

So I took the plunge today and ordered a Reber no.12 (9501N) Meat Grinder and a Reber 5kg sausage stuffer (8906N) in stainless steel from Italy. Total price came to less than half that of the UK dealers I'd been looking at. I'll let you know how I get on with delivery and usage once I've had some time to try them out, if that's of interest to anyone? So far I've been using a manual grinder so it should be a pleasure to step up to something automated!

Thought I'd update on this - Kit arrived on Friday after dispatching from Italy on Monday. Just did a trial batch of about 2kilos using Oddley's excellent Cumberland Sausage recipe. The whole process went super-smoothly. (Tastes delicious, have already posted to thank Oddley for that).

What a massive difference having good gear makes to this cooking process! All in all, I'm delighted, having got a really top notch grinder and stuffer for just over £300 including delivery.

*Slight* note of caution: the grinder wasn't the exact model specified - ordered a 9501N (500W) and got a 9602N (600W). I'm not going to send it back...
